The #SheisWe campaign is organised by the European Commission in the context of the European Development Days – EDD 2018, Europe’s leading forum on international co-operation and development, for which Government Europa is acting as a media partner.
#SheisWe is an global online campaign to promote the positive role of women in development. The campaign shows that when women are trusted and invested in, there are benefits for all of us. The #SheisWe campaign emphasises stories of people everywhere in the world, and engages renowned personalities, activists, and members of the development community.
Many personalities have joined the campaign as She is We ambassadors, including: businesswoman Maria Eitel, singer and politician Youssou N’Dour, Executive Director of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, gynaecologist Dr Denis Mukwege, 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Leymah Gbowee, abolitionist Grace Forrest, activist Ela Bhatt, and the founder of Womanity Yann Borgstedt.
These renowned personalities and members of the development community have volunteered to spread the stories of people as part of the #SheisWe campaign, showing that when women are empowered and invested in there are benefits for the entire society.
The EDD 2018 focus
The EDD 2018 will focus on gender equality and the empowerment and engagement of women and girls in sustainable development around three major themes:
- Physical and psychological integrity of women and girls;
- Socio-economic rights/empowerment of women and girls;
- Voice and participation for women and girls.
The campaign is organised by EuropeAid for the European Development Days, which is a global forum that is focusing this year on ‘Women and Girls at the Forefront of Sustainable Development’ to promote a safer, more inclusive and open world for women.
There are many topics to be discussed at the EDD 2018, these include access to education and jobs, entrepreneurship, enforcing the legal and policy framework tackling all forms of sexual and gender-based violence, as well as social issues ranging from girls’ and women’s human rights to climate change.
